Develop a Magazine ad - Design & Layout - 2.5 hours

Concept & Idea Development - Collect materials and figure out what components are needed to capture for photography and copy for your section. Learn about stock photography and fpo images, write dynamic headlines

Layout & Print Prep: learn the basics of page layout and composition as well creating a color palette and font selection (the dos and don’ts of typography, & how to find and install new fonts, flowing type, adjusting widows, leading, kerning, use of color on a page. Print prep covers color management, pulling bleeds, and print resolution.

Learn the ins and outs of the print design and editing process including: Group collaboration & conceptual thinking; editorial photography, journalism & copywriting, typography, layout & composition

the Details
Each workshop is comprised of 3-6 people (9 years old & above*)
1. Group collaboration & conceptual thinking: together the group will select the subject matter and learn how to fully develop an idea through brainstorming as they name their magazine.
2. Each member of the group will select a section of the magazine and becomes the personal editor of that section of the magazine.
3. Delve into research finding fun and unique facts imagery and other information for the section. Collect materials and figure out what components are needed to capture for photography and copy for your section. Learn about stock photography and fpo images .
4. Work out basic layout with FPO images and copy - learn the basics of page layout and composition as well creating a color palette and font selection (the dos and don’ts of typography, & how to find and install new fonts)
5. Photography - Once layout is complete we'll photograph the images necessary to complete the layout. Here you'll learn the basics of editorial photography including lighting, composition, color, and resolution as well as an introduction to green screen photography
6. Post Photo Editing - learn how to adjust contrast, curves, saturation, retouch images, background removal, post cropping, and print prep and requirements for the photography.
7. Journalism & Copywriting: Write an article for your section: Learn how to capture your audience in a few words with your title as well as how to properly interview conduct an interview, what quotes to pull, vocabulary enhancement using the thesaurus and how to write and edit an article with a strict character count.
8. Layout and design & Print Prep: take all elements and finalize your design. Learn about flowing in type & adjusting widows, leading, kerning, use of color on a page. Print prep covers color management, pulling bleeds, resolution.
9. Before we send the magazine to the printer, in small groups your team will use all the newly learned skills to design a full page ad to run in the magazine.
